Hutchison Whampoa climbs into Fortune 500
Homegrown conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa has finally edged into the world's top 500 firms, joining 14 other mainland or Hong Kong-listed companies on the Fortune 500 list.
Li Ka-shing's flagship ranks 407 on the list, released yesterday, with a revenue of HK$145.61 billion last year.
Hutchison, the world's first 3G operator and largest private port investor, narrowly missed making the list in 1999 despite posting a record profit for Hong Kong that year of HK$117.34 billion after selling Orange to Mannesmann.
The Fortune 500 list ranks revenue before profit.
Mainland newcomers to the list are power company State Grid Corporation of China, at 46, Shanghai Baosteel at 372 and Shanghai Automotive at 461.
Also appearing on the list are Hong Kong-listed companies HSBC (ranked 47), Sinopec (53), PetroChina (73), China Life Insurance (241), China Mobile (242), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (243) and China Telecom (257).
