Distrust of Tung rises, poll finds

Kelvin Chan

The number of people who had no confidence in Tung Chee-hwa has surged to 66 per cent, a recent survey found. The figure was 59 per cent the week before.

The number of people who said they do have confidence in Mr Tung fell 1 percentage point to 16 per cent, according to the opinion poll, conducted between July 2 and 5 by Hong Kong University's Public Opinion Programme.

Mr Tung's popularity rating also dipped after the July 1 protest march.

His popularity score on the researchers' scale of 1 to 100 fell to 44.4, down from 45.7 in the preceding week.

The university polled about 1,000 people, with a response rate of 63 per cent.

The July 1 rally, which organisers said drew half a million people, was probably the main factor in Mr Tung's lower ratings, said programme director Robert Chung Ting-yiu.

'The survey was conducted after the July 1 rally but before the Legislative Council Sars report was released,' he said.

The most popular officials were Chief Secretary Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen and Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works Sarah Liao Sau-tung. Their ratings all rose into the high 50s.
