Event encourages Hong Kong designers and manufacturers to start their own collections and brands

The Hong Kong Fashion Week spring/summer edition is staging the New Fashion Collection Award for the fourth year running.

'It's a great way to encourage Hong Kong manufacturers to start their own collections and brand names by working more closely with designers,' said  Hong Kong Trade Development Council senior exhibitions manager Anne Chick. The council is the organiser of the event.

The fashion design contest targets Hong Kong companies, with the finalists taking part in a fashion show to be held  tomorrow. It is divided into two categories: occasional wear and day wear.

Prizes will go to the enterprises and their  designers whose collections are judged to show Best Application of Technology, Most Creative and Most Marketable for day wear and occasional wear.

The best collection will be honoured with an overall winner award.

The preliminary judging was held earlier, and 11 shortlisted finalists were asked to prepare  six complete ensembles to be paraded during the catwalk event.

The judges will take into account marketability, use of fabrics, application of technology and creativity.

One of the adjudicators, designer Henry Lau, whose label is SPY, has first-hand experience of what it is like to be a young designer.

'In my opinion, this will enhance the creative industry of Hong Kong fashion,' he said. 'It gives newcomers more opportunities and is a good chance for them to show their creative collections in public.'

Mr Lau said the exercise  was not just about creativity.

'They [participants] also need to balance it with marketability through the use of fabric, style and accessories. It is also a big challenge for green designers to make this balance.'

The award for Best Application of Technology is sponsored by Lectra Hong Kong.

'The event is aimed at encouraging Hong Kong enterprises to start their own collections and brand names by working more closely with designers,' said Lydia Ho, Lectra's computer-aided design application specialist and a member of the judging panel.

'The Lectra award is part of our support for the fashion and textile industry in Hong Kong, plus we have a long history of co-operating with the Trade Development Council.

'This contest and the Young Designers Award, at Fashion Week in January, are the key elements for us. The industry needs recognition from enterprises to show the importance of designing their own collections.'

She said Hong Kong had created several brands that had become known overseas, and especially in the mainland.

'The creative industries, including fashion and textiles, are seen as an area that can be strengthened in Hong Kong. By rewarding  rising stars, Lectra wants to offer its support while at the same time highlighting the importance of technology in this development,' Ms Ho said.
