The phone rings. A mysterious caller whispers: 'Hello. Remember me? Your wife is so nice. Your daughter is so beautiful and speaks English ...' Don't worry, it's not a repeat of the late-night phone call that forced radio talk-show host Allen Lee Peng-fei to quit the airwaves. The lines are taken from the opening of the theme song to the political satire, East Wing West Wing's 'Mic On!! Mic Off!!!' Co-directors Edward Lam Yick-wah and Mathias Woo Yan-wai said it was a special time for Hong Kong people, as they had seen the resignations of three radio talk-show hosts, but also the recent comeback of the 'God of Canto-pop', Sam Hui Koon-kit. 'We want to explore how Hong Kong people view their own 'microphone'. Do they have anything they want to say? Do they know through which channel they can express their views?' said Lam. The sequel to the successful East Wing West Wing is being produced by Zuni Icosahedron and the Edward Lam Dance Theatre and will be staged from August 13 to September 5 at the Shouson Theatre of the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai.
