Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Peter Velappan remained unrepentant after questioning Beijing's ability to host a successful Olympics in 2008.

The Malaysian launched a scathing attack on the behaviour of the fans at Saturday's opening match for failing to support the event.

'I've seen the plans and infrastructure for 2008. They'll be the best in the world, it'll be the Olympics of the century, but these big tournaments are known for what the people do for the celebration of the events.'

A spokeswoman for the Asian Cup's local organising committee said that local fans were not booing the AFC and FIFA presidents at the opening ceremony, explaining that a technical glitch was behind the controversy.

'The football fans were warm and polite,' said spokeswoman Wang Hui.

'The audio system for the big screen had some technical problems. The sound was delayed by 10 seconds. When Blatter and Velappan and other senior officials entered the stadium, the hissing and booing that they heard were not aimed at them,' she said, adding that she didn't know who the fans were jeering.'
