Updated at 6.21pm: More and more divorced people in Hong Kong are now re-marrying, Ming Pao reported on Wednesday. The newspaper cited Census and Statistics Department figures showing that many divorced people were trying to give marriage another go. Despite the rise in divorce rates in the territory, 26.2 per cent of the 32,000 marriages registered in 2002 involved people re-marrying. However, in 1987 and 1997, the proportion of people re-marrying out of the total number of marriages was 8.3 per cent and 17.2 per cent, respectively. This was a dramatic increase in re-marriage, the paper said. Department statistician Billy Li Yeuk-goat told Ming Pao that people re-marrying was a rising trend. He said the trend was related to the rise in divorce rates from 10,000 cases in 1997 to 13,000 in 2003.
