Jiang Yanyong, held ahead of June 4, underwent 'study sessions', family says
Jiang Yanyong , the military doctor who blew the whistle on last year's cover-up of the mainland's Sars outbreak, was released yesterday after seven weeks in detention.
Dr Jiang, 72, appeared in good physical condition despite having been subjected to 'brainwashing' in re-education sessions while in custody, according to a source close to his family.
But his daughter Jiang Rui , who confirmed his release, said in California: 'This is not the end of the issue. Whatever he does he will require approval from the military. To give interviews or just to leave the house, he will need approval.
'Having him released should be a happy thing. But now he loses freedom.'
Dr Jiang and his wife, Hua Zhongwei , went missing on June 1 when they were on the way to the US embassy in Beijing to apply for visas so they could visit their daughter in California. Ms Hua was released two weeks later.
