Two halves of equation

Should Hong Kong wives follow Schlessinger's advice and become like Stepford Wives to keep their husbands happy?

Simon Lam Sai-kit, 48, retired, married three times

'No. Communication between the two is essential in a marriage to make it a happy one. They should respect and care for each other. Wives should always appreciate and encourage their other halves, and they should both always treasure each other, too. A happy marriage somehow relies on the family's financial ability. Quarrels start when you are short of money.'

Louisa Shum

Chi-yan, 29, manager of Hang Seng Bank's Investment Fund Department, single

'That sounds like a man's view of a happy marriage. I'd hope my future husband would be able to support and take care of me and provide me with guidance. A couple should share common values. This is particularly important when talking about big issues. And I don't think women's role in marriage is to serve. Long ago, women relied on men, so they had to serve men and treat them like the boss. But nowadays, both partners contribute to the family. It's better to say 'take care', rather than 'serve'.'

Will Ng Ka-fai, 22, fresh graduate from Polytechnic University, single

'That would be a one-sided relationship. The pair should be good to each other. Understanding each other and communication between the two are essential elements in a happy marriage. I think no one in modern society would think a woman's role is just to serve, right? That's too old fashioned.'

Ho Miu-chun, 38, secondary school teacher, married

'Of course not! Why is your other half called your better half? Think of a human heart. If the two halves are different sizes, there'd be imbalance. A couple should also be equal and fair to each other in order to make the relationship healthy. Women are never followers or servants of men. It's just the sexual difference that makes the duties of the two different.'

Lee Wun, 78, married

'Respect and care are a must [in a marriage]! I believe it's the duty of wives to serve their husbands. Men don't want to see their wives nagging all day long. And if a man decides to leave you, there's no way you can make him stay.'
