A solicitor whose business primarily handles mainland investments declared her candidacy yesterday for the legal functional constituency.

Phyllis Kwong Ka-yin said she would focus more on matters affecting the profession instead of 'abstract political issues'.

'With due respect, Margaret [Ng Ngoi-yee, the incumbent] has been a very outstanding politician but we need a strong voice for the profession and I don't think there has been such a voice because she is more concerned with bigger political issues like Article 23 or Article 45,' Ms Kwong said.

'As lawyers, of course we are all concerned about rule of law, democracy, freedom of speech, human rights and justice.

'But a lot of our colleagues, particularly solicitors, feel that our environment is getting worse and we need someone to stand up and fight for us rather than fight for abstract things like democracy, justice or whatever.'
