The three-member team, three graduate trainees in engineering and finance, held off eight other finalists in a simulation exercise on Saturday to capture the South China Morning Post Perpetual Trophy, winning $25,000 cash and air tickets to Auckland.

The nine finalists were tasked with managing a fictional garment manufacturer with the objective of outperforming their competitors and returning the highest profit.

'Obviously it was just a game, but it felt like we ran a real business,' said Michelle Lau Pui-yee, a graduate trainee in engineering.

'We made two mistakes which we thought might have cost us the game, but nevertheless we were confident we would at least be in the top three,' added team-member Trevor Tang Cheuk-wah, also a graduate trainee.

Mr Tang attributed the victory to hard work, citing 'many a happy hour' conducting after-work meetings, discussing strategy and reviewing past results with the hope of learning from mistakes.

Delighted with the result, Claire Shih Leung-leung jokingly commented that she hoped that Towngas would give the team paid leave to attend the competition in New Zealand.
