The Shenzhen government has revealed more details of its plans to recruit Hong Kong professionals to its civil service - but it is still not saying how much it will pay.

It hopes to recruit more than 100 people at a job fair in Hong Kong next month, said an official in charge of foreign recruitment.

Wen Wei Po reported that 51 public organisations in the border city planned to recruit 60 consultants, 67 managers and 116 'ordinary' staff. But the official yesterday refused to confirm the report. He said details of the recruitment were still 'under study'.

It will be the first time a mainland government tries to attract people from Hong Kong. Shenzhen leaders hope recruiting the talent will make the special economic zone's administration more effective and improve its governance.

The official said this was the fifth time Shenzhen sought to recruit skilled professionals from outside the mainland. The city has held large-scale job fairs in Britain and Australia before.

A professor at Shenzhen University said the latest move underlined the Shenzhen government's ambition to turn the city into 'an international metropolis'.
