Adult-movie maker is told to seek his aspiring actors and actresses elsewhere

Hong Kong's pornographic-film makers desperately need actors and actresses - and yesterday tried to advertise at a job fair to find them.

No experience is required, but they say you have to be 'serious and passionate' about the film industry.

The Sun Power Production Company posted an advertisement to hire people at a job fair co-organised by the Good Jobs section of Weekend Weekly magazine and the Hong Kong Employment Development Service.  It stated they were looking for actors aged from 18 to 38 to  star in adult films.

The advertisement was removed 90 minutes after the start of the two-day event.

Company manager Tommy Wong said they wanted to produce cheap adult movies. He said the firm believed there was a market in Hong Kong since the adult movie industry was dominated by Japanese and Korean companies.

Asked what qualities the company was looking for, a Sun Power employee said: 'The most important thing is to overcome the psychological gap - be willing to take off your clothes. And how much you earn depends on how much you are worth.'

The basic wage rate for a recruit in the adult film production industry is just $3,000 to $4,000 a month, and for an actress $5,000 to $6,000.

The co-ordinator of the fair, Carmen Yan Ka-man,  removed the sign but stressed she believed  the job was a proper occupation.

'We should not discriminate against them,' she told reporters scrambling for a response. 'But we did not expect there would be this reaction.

'We have a responsibility to respect our co-organiser and we do not wish to create unnecessary misunderstandings.'

The company was eventually told the advertisement was not acceptable given the fair's youthful target audience.

Employment Development Service marketing director Winnie Chan Wai-yan said they had not noticed that such openings were available at the jobs fair.

'We respect every kind of occupation,' she said. 'However, we think  it is inappropriate to have such jobs available at this fair.'

She also believed they had a duty to protect the youth of Hong Kong.

'We do not recommend  they start their careers in such industries. They should choose jobs of a better ethical standard,' she said.

But Mr Wong insisted his company was a legitimate business.

'We do not violate the law,' he said. 'People should not view us with bias.

'None of our ads are deceptive. I even mentioned that the actors have to be in nude.'

He was also worried in case the public had been misled into thinking his company was illegal.

'I don't understand why the organisers are so sensitive.'

Mr Wong said he would follow up with Weekend Weekly to find out how he could claim compensation.
