Support grows for chief executive, survey shows

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's popularity is at its highest level since October 2002, according to an ongoing public opinion poll by the University of Hong Kong.

Support ratings for Mr Tung climbed to 48.3 per cent, according to the poll, conducted from July 26 to 29 by the university's Public Opinion Programme. That is up from 44.4 per cent from the last time they asked the question two weeks earlier.

Programme director Robert Chung Ting-yiu said the chief executive's popularity had been climbing since May.

Mainland tourists have minimal effect on crime

Macau police recorded 4,637 crimes in the first six months of this year, a 5.3 per cent fall compared with the same period last year, Secretary for Security Cheong Kuoc-va said yesterday.
