Support grows for chief executive, survey shows

Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's  popularity is at its highest level since October 2002, according to an  ongoing public opinion poll by the University of Hong Kong.

Support ratings for Mr Tung climbed to 48.3 per cent, according to the poll, conducted from July 26 to 29 by the university's Public Opinion Programme. That is up from 44.4 per cent from the last time they asked the question two weeks  earlier.

Programme director Robert Chung Ting-yiu  said the chief executive's popularity had been climbing since May.

Mainland tourists have minimal effect on crime

Macau police recorded 4,637 crimes in the first six months of this year, a 5.3 per cent fall compared with  the same period last year, Secretary for Security  Cheong Kuoc-va  said yesterday.

He said  the growing number of individual mainland travellers to Macau  had 'no serious impact' on the city's crime situation, with just five  solo visitors  committing a crime in the first half of the year.  While most types of crimes had fallen in the first six months, the number of cases of possession of  counterfeit money had grown significantly, from  30 cases reported in the first half of last year to 158.

Civil servants told  to improve efficiency

Civil servants have been told to improve efficiency after  surveys showed the perception of efficiency had deteriorated over the past two years.

Secretary for the Civil Service Joseph Wong Wing-ping  told colleagues  that the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy  figures showed the efficiency index of  the civil service had worsened from 3.26 in 2002 to 3.50, out of a scale of 10.

'While we should take pride in the high rating achieved in the survey, there is no room for complacency. We should continue to work together to improve the efficiency,' he said.
