Watching Halle Berry crawl around in body-hugging  ripped leather is not a  pleasant experience? There,  I never thought I could type those words.

Put it down to a clumsy script, ropey use of computer-generated effects and bland, almost sexless performances from the two principals, who are supposed to be sizzling up the screen - Catwoman is a letdown on so many fronts.

Berry, of course, has pretty big boots to fill: Eartha Kitt  and Michelle Pfeiffer were  both astonishing in previous incarnations of the feline superhero do-gooder who doesn't mind doing a little  bit of bad, as well. What's  a surprise is just how spectacularly she fails.

As the innocent and wistful Patience Phillips, she just  grates. As the night-creeping Catwoman, she seems devoid  of any of the sensuality you  hope she'd bring to the role. Benjamin Bratt is thrown in as the policeman/lover whose job  it is to track her down, but there are entire forests less wooden than this leading man.

The reliable  Sharon Stone scorches with what little she is given to do, but even her turn as the evil model intent on ruling the cosmetics industry at any cost becomes lost under the shudderingly turgid weight of inept dialogue.

Much of the blame lies off-screen. The CGI is wantonly overused as time and time  again we're treated to the same bird's eye views of the cityscape through which Catwoman prowls. Thus, the greatest  crime committed is that director Pitof has made the whole thing  a crushing bore.
