Most of the 11 functional constituency candidates returned uncontested yesterday pledged to fight for their sectors' interests.
While many put economic revival as their top priority, most believed universal suffrage should be introduced step-by-step and stressed the importance of building a stable and harmonious city.
Most said they had yet to consider whether they would seek direct election in four years' time.
Among the candidates standing uncontested, three are from the Breakfast Group, and four are Legco newcomers, including two from the Liberal Party.
The Breakfast Group's Bernard Charnwut Chan is the only one so far to state that it will be his last four-year term representing the insurance sector. 'If I run for Legco election next term, I will stand for direct election,' he said.
Besides pledging to build a bridge between the central government and Hong Kong, he said he would encourage more people in the sector to become involved in politics. He also called for universal suffrage by 2012.
