Japanese film director Shunji Iwai is a hardcore soccer fan and even has a documentary of the 2002 World Cup to prove it. The maker of the 1995 hit tearjerker The Love Letter, who was in Hong Kong last week to promote his new film Hana and Alice, was quite specific that his Saturday night could not be interrupted with interviews. It was instead reserved for the live telecast of the Asian Cup final between China and Japan. His minders took him out to the Lin Kee Hotpot restaurant in Causeway Bay where Iwai-san was more engrossed in the boiling action on television than his hot soup. The director was most apologetic when a replay of Japan's second goal showed there was a handball, but felt the team was vindicated when a third hit the back of the net. 'It was a good game,' he said with satisfaction before tucking in to his dinner.
