Deng Xiaoping would be pleased with the development of China if he was around to witness it, his eldest son says.

Deng Pufang made the remark during a rare public appearance with his three sisters - Deng Lin , Deng Nan and Deng Rong - and their children at the opening of an exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of his father's birth.

'He wanted to create an opportunity for the rejuvenation of China ... and maintain it so that it wouldn't be lost,' Mr Deng said.

'I think if he saw our development, he would be satisfied. But the process has not finished yet and we still have to move forward.'

The Deng family, one of the most powerful in China, has withdrawn from the limelight since the paramount leader's death seven years ago, although it retains powerful positions in government ministries and the PLA.

Deng's family members toured the exhibition in the National Museum with the head of the Communist Party Publicity Department, Liu Yunshan , and Minister of Culture Sun Jiazheng .
