The celebrated Yuen Long crocodile will be named 'Pui Pui' - a name which was 'interesting, lovely and easy to remember', an Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department spokesman said on Thursday. 
The name was picked from 1,600 entries - 1,000 in Chinese and 600 in English - in a competition open to public. 
'Pui Pui' is a transliteration of the Chinese characters in the crocodile's Chinese name, which indicates that it comes from the Shan Pui River. 
The panel considered it suitable for a female crocodile. 
'The name also means it ['Pui Pui'] is the apple of the public's eye,' the spokesman explained.
'The enthusiastic response to the competition underscored the strong public affection for the crocodile,' he added. 
'Pui Pui' was considered by the panel as the best name for the crocodile. The other two winning English entries were 'Cro Co' and 'Crocostar'. 
The crocodile is under the care of Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden. It would be housed in Wetland Park in Yuen Long next year, the spokesman said. 
The 1.5-metre, 14 kilogram saltwater crocodile was first spotted by villagers at Shan Pui River last October. It was caught on June 10 when it was snared in a wire noose. 

Fisherman Ng Lo-tau then wrapped it in several nets before alerting wardens.
'Pui Pui' eluded some of the world best crocodile hunters, including John Lever from Australia and 'Croc Chiu' He Zhanzhao from the mainland. 

The reptile fascinated Hong Kong people; many went to Yuen Long to try to see it.
