New name chosen for Yuen Long crocodile
Updated at 12.40pm: The celebrated Yuen Long crocodile will be named 'Pui Pui' - a name which was 'interesting, lovely and easy to remember', an Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department spokesman said on Thursday.
The name was picked from 1,600 entries - 1,000 in Chinese and 600 in English - in a competition open to public.
'Pui Pui' is a transliteration of the Chinese characters in the crocodile's Chinese name, which indicates that it comes from the Shan Pui River.
The panel considered it suitable for a female crocodile.
'The name also means it ['Pui Pui'] is the apple of the public's eye,' the spokesman explained.
'The enthusiastic response to the competition underscored the strong public affection for the crocodile,' he added.
