How much would you pay for a watermelon? A saleswoman at a big department store in Causeway Bay told LoDown that melon aficionados are willing to fork out up to $1,000 for the latest fruity treat - the black watermelon from Japan. The variety weighs about 16kg and is becoming very popular among celebrities. Movie stars, including Chow Yun-Fat, have tried them and found them 'very juicy' with a honey flavour. If you want to go for something a bit more exotic, you can also sample the geometrically implausible square watermelon, also from Japan, which costs about $1,800. And if really big melons are what get your taste buds salivating you may like to try a dragon egg watermelon, which weigh in at a whopping 18kg and cost $688 each. But LoDown will pay only $50 for an ordinary watermelon at the local supermarket. Our philosophy is a mouthful is more than enough.
