Mongkok's new hotel, the stylish Langham Place (sister to the Langham Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui), at 555 Shanghai Street (tel: 3552 3388), is in the 'soft opening' stage. While other areas of the hotel (banquet and meeting rooms, gym, spa and swimming pool) are scheduled for completion in January, the hotel's three restaurants are now open. The Ming Court Chinese restaurant (below) is offering dishes such as Yunnan cucumber and salted duck egg yolk ($55), double-boiled American ginseng soup with sea whelk ($220) and braised superior bird's nest stuffed with bamboo fungus ($418). Many of the dishes are available in small (serving one or two) or regular (serving three or four) sizes, and include steamed chicken with egg white and Chinese yellow wine ($58 or $108) and braised Yunnan ham with honey sauce and chrysanthemum flowers ($53 or $98). Many dishes are also available a la carte, such as lobster mulligatawny with chickpeas ($48), linguine with shrimp, calamari and mussels in spicy tomato fondue ($130), crisp suckling pig roll on potato mash and red cabbage ($118), Hainan chicken rice ($145) and roast duck Thai red curry ($128). For reservations, call 3552 3200. Portal - Work & Play (tel: 3552 3232) houses the business centre and a lounge with entertainment to show 'that work can be fun'. For lunch, the Portal serves an international range of bento boxes such as the vegetarian (grilled marinated eggplant with roast peppers and goats cheese, vegetable salad with balsamic vinegar and red potatoes with fresh herb dressing ($99) and Osaka (sushi, steamed egg custard with tobiko, enoki and beef roll, grilled uni on rice and pickled vegetables, $118). For dinner, there's a snack menu and raw bar, which serves sushi, seafood and oysters.
