Primary school students are learning to speak English and Putonghua by taking cooking, make-up and yoga classes at two private teaching centres.

The Let's Talk centres in Mid-Levels and Kowloon Tong are offering the special classes as a way of attracting students who prefer an alternative to the regular classroom-and-homework routine.

'We try to use new ideas and avoid making classes like those at a regular private tuition centre,' said Stanley Choi, director of the Let's Talk Group.

'We encourage activities and organise events where students are immersed in English while doing something that they view as enjoyable.'

One former student at the Mid-Levels centre, which opened six years ago, said she had good memories of her time there and the lessons improved her English quickly.

'The classes are very casual and you learn quickly through the activities, by playing games, or doing role plays,' said Shiren Ho Mei-yan, 17.

'There is no homework either. It's not tuition as most people would think, but you do learn English. I used to attend a hip-hop class where we learnt all the vocabulary as we danced. You learn words like swing, side-kick, tip-toe, lift-up or switch.'
