Mainland weightlifter pushes through pain barrier to secure first Olympic medal

Strongman Zhang Guozheng experienced both intense pain and unbridled joy after he earned China's third weightlifting gold in the men's 69kg category in a highly emotional victory.

The 29-year-old lifter from Fujian province had to be helped off the stage after severely injuring his back in attempting 192.5kg on his final lift of the clean and jerk.

He had previously snatched 160kg and jerked 187kg for a total of 347.5kg.

The two-time world champion then survived several anxious moments as South Korean rival Lee Bae-young attempted 195kg on his last lift, which would have been good enough for the title on his lower body weight.

But Lee failed, giving Zhang the gold - his first Olympic medal, after finishing fourth in Sydney four years ago.
