Second 'peeping Tom' conviction for descendant of bus firm founder

A descendant of Kowloon Motor Bus co-founder Lui Leung  was convicted yesterday of loitering in the women's restroom of a Causeway Bay karaoke pub.

Derek Lui Tak-yiu, 31, was remanded in jail for two weeks before sentencing on September 2.

It is the second time Lui has been convicted of loitering.

He was fined in 1998 for the charge after he wandered into a women's restroom.

Magistrate Johnny Chan Jong-herng  of Eastern Court said he did not believe Lui's testimony that he had gone into the restroom by accident.

The defendant's lawyer, Selwyn Yu,  requested that Lui be allowed bail because his being absent from work as deputy director at CIGNA Worldwide Insurance Company for 14 days could cause him to lose his job.

But Mr Chan rejected Mr Yu's request, saying he did not see any remorse in Lui. He said  he was not sympathetic towards the defendant because this was the second time he had committed the offence.

Lui was arrested in April after a woman saw his head from the next  cubicle as she was about to use the toilet, the court heard.

She alerted the pub's staff and the police were called.

In his testimony, Lui said he went into the women's restroom accidentally because he was drunk and needed to vomit.

The court heard that he had red wine during dinner and had whisky at the karaoke pub.

Lui added that he stepped on the toilet lid because the floor was dirty.

He had sat on the  water tank to vomit into the toilet.

Lui then closed the lid to step on it before getting off the water tank. He said that might have been when the woman saw his head.

Private toilets are available in large karaoke rooms of Windsor House's California Red Box Plus.

But Lui did not use the one in his room because he had gone into his friend's room and did not know if one was available there, he said.

But when asked whether he had been to the men's room before he got drunk, Lui said he did not remember.

This drew suspicion from the magistrate, who questioned why Lui was able to remember things from after he was drunk but not before.

Mr Chan has asked for probation, community service and psychiatric reports before sentencing Lui.
