Schoolgirl swimmer Elaine Chan Yu-ning hopes to follow in the footsteps of her friend and teammate Hannah Wilson by breaking a Hong Kong record at the Athens Olympics today.

The Form Five student from Heep Yunn School, who will race in the 50-metre freestyle heats at 10am (3pm Hong Kong time), said she is aiming to beat her own Hong Kong record of 26.21 seconds set five months ago.

'I think everyone should have a dream and try hard to achieve it,' said Elaine, 16. 'Now I want to break the record again. One day I dream that the China flag will be raised at the Olympics for me.'

In Wednesday's 100m freestyle heats, Hannah, 15, swam an excellent race, breaking her own national record on the world's biggest stage.

The Island School student finished fourth in a time of 57.33, improving on her old mark of 57.60 set at the Olympic trials in March.
