Celebrations are under way for the 20 students who gained four or more A grades

Places at world-class universities are awaiting the 20 Hong Kong students who bagged four or more English A-levels.

Across the English Schools Foundation's five secondary schools, at least six students netted five A-levels at grade A and a further eight students gained four A-grades.

Several of them also gained top grades in AS-levels, which are taken at age 17.

At the German Swiss International School, six of the 36 students taking A-levels gained four A-grade passes.

Carol Leung, 18, of Braemar Hill, was one of four students picking up their results at South Island School in Aberdeen on Thursday who found out they had got five straight As.

She will now take up a place at Georgetown University in Washington DC, majoring in economics and political science.

'My hands were shaking while I was waiting but when I opened my envelope I felt relieved and happy,' she said.

'The deputy principal came over and congratulated me and I gave her a hug.

'These results make me feel more confident and will give me the option to take up higher-level courses in the first year at the university.'

Rebecca Fok Po-yee, 18, of Mid-Levels, is heading for the London School of Economics to study accounting and finance after gaining five A-grades at Island School.

'I worked very hard for these results and it was a very stressful year,' she said.

'I did homework every evening and often stayed up until 2am to complete my assignments. When I saw I had five As, I was relieved and happy.

'All the universities I applied to had high grade requirements but these results could have got me into any of them.'

Alvin Cheung Yu-hin, 18, of Sha Tin, netted a perfect score of 45 points in the International Baccalaureate Diploma at Sha Tin College and is going to Cambridge to read law. He went online at 2am to pick up the results as soon as they were posted on the IBO website.

'I screamed when I saw my results,' he said. 'I was warned at the beginning of the course just how hard the IB was and when I got a perfect score I was astonished.'
