Model-turned-singer Ella Koon is not your typical Canto-pop singer, and independent label Boombeat is keen to show she's more than just a pretty face.
Her debut album, Original, steers clear of formulaic Canto-pop and offers something a little different.
Boombeat have managed to line up plenty of famous musicians to collaborate with their up-and-coming star. These include legendary drummer Jun Kung, Beyond's Paul Wong Koon-chung, Hong Kong's premier jazz guitarist Eugene Pao, Chet Lam Yat-fung and Eric Kwok.
A personal favourite on the album is Aground, composed by Kung. It is a mellow song backed by light beats. Wong's contribution How Much Can You Love? is another highlight, with its dark vibe and a catchy chorus.
However, rather than having a distinctive sound, the album is like a compilation of the best works from local musicians. Koon's vocals are decent, but she needs to work harder if she doesn't want to be a one-hit wonder.
