The Jury Must Die by Carol O'Connell Arrow $101 This is the seventh in a series about New York Special Crimes investigator Kathy Mallory. As the title implies, jury members are being picked off, after bringing in a unanimous acquittal. The suspect has been nicknamed 'The Reaper' because of his habit of murdering with a scythe. The convoluted story is incidental to the real meat of this book - character development. Mallory is a unique creation, having grown up among prostitutes and addicts on the streets of New York, and she dishes out her own brand of law enforcement. Her antagonist and shadow, the hunchbacked Dr Johanna Apollo, is an unlikely thriller character. The action starts slowly but soon has the reader gripped. The only downside is O'Connell's often clumsy writing, which interrupts the flow of the plot.
