Three foreign designs have been shortlisted for a new tower in Guangzhou, which could make it the world's tallest when it is completed.

Designs from British firm Arup Qualification, the Architecture Studio of France, and Leon Wohlhage Wernik of Germany were selected from 13 submissions by a steering committee led by a group of international experts.

The Guangzhou TV Tower will be built in the city centre, near the Pearl River, and will be at least 450 metres high, according to the British design. If the French design is adopted, it could stretch to 588 metres, or to 664 metres if the German firm wins.

The highest structure in the world is currently Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which stands 509 metres tall.

A skyscraper being built in the United Arab Emirates will be more than 610 metres high, although some reports say it could reach 705 metres.

The current Guangzhou TV Tower, which will be superseded by the new building and is located in a different part of the city, is about 200 metres tall.
