I WAS offended by the statement of Dr Hari Harilela (South China Morning Post, September 28) that ''China is going to run Hong Kong after 1997. Those who don't like it, why don't they leave''.
I have nothing against Dr Harilela personally, but judging from this statement, I doubt whether he is a real Hong Konger. Everyone in the street knows there is a large percentage of Hong Kong people, who want to leave this place but cannot do so because they have no choice but to stay behind. That is why I don't think Dr Harilela understands the implications of what he said.
Maybe he has a choice of going back to Britain or India. But most of us don't have that luxury.
In addition, I don't agree with him on his comment that it is unfair for a colonial governor to talk about electoral reforms with Beijing and it should be the British Prime Minister or the Foreign Minister's job to do such things. To me, it does not matter at all as long as the Hong Kong Governor can make decisions on behalf of the British Government.
It is less than four years till 1997. Why can't we get to the point and work for a better Hong Kong? Please don't waste our time on ''saving face''! NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED
