Frontier candidate Emily Lau Wai-hing claimed yesterday that 'professionals' had broken into her house and might have taken copies of documents.

She said the break-in could be linked to an intensifying 'smear campaign' directed at the pro-democracy camp.

Ms Lau, who is defending her seat in New Territories East, said detectives had confirmed that the burglars who broke into her two-storey house in Castle Peak Road, Ting Kau, were 'professionals' who had been careful to cover their tracks.

'I don't feel any sense of security right now as this has happened amid the explosive atmosphere outside,' Ms Lau said.

Asked if she believed the intrusion was linked to the smear campaign that democrats say has been mounted against them, Ms Lau said: 'It more or less looks like it, as they might have taken copies of documents.'
