Main-board listing candidate ZTE Corp, the mainland's No2 telecommunications equipment manufacturer, is focusing on international expansion after more than doubling its interim earnings. Buoyed by a 353.48 per cent growth in exports, ZTE yesterday reported a 163.46 per cent year-on-year surge in first-half profit to 513.18 million yuan. Turnover for the period doubled to 11.77 billion yuan. 'Looking forward, ZTE will step up efforts to expand into international markets, to improve our product quality and customer satisfaction level and to enhance the company's competitiveness,' ZTE said in its earnings release. The firm said international sales quadrupled to 2.07 billion yuan for the first half of the year. Mainland handsets sales - including GSM, CDMA and xiaolingtong units - also showed strong growth, with sales revenue doubling in the first half to 2.65 billion yuan. 'While expanding the scale of our operations, ZTE is also focusing on cost control. We're now beginning to enjoy the benefits of economies of scale,' the company said, adding that it foresaw profit growth in its core businesses would exceed revenue gain. ZTE is riding on fast-growing overseas sales to drive earnings growth, as is its rival Huawei Technologies. Shenzhen-listed telecommunications equipment supplier Huawei said it would try to tap international capital markets for funds to drive its expansion. ZTE is seeking to list in Hong Kong in the fourth quarter, hoping to raise US$350 million. The A-share company shelved its H-share listing plan two years ago because of strong opposition from minority shareholders.
