Court dismisses appeal bid over falun gong
The Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed an application from the Director of Immigration to take the Falun Gong to the Court of Final Appeal. The application wanted to stop the chairman of the Hong Kong Association of Falun Dafa joining a judicial review initiated by four Taiwanese practitioners. In June, the Court of Appeal granted leave to the chairman of the Falun Gong in Hong Kong and the association to join legal proceedings examining a decision to bar overseas members from entering Hong Kong for a religious conference.
Alleged fraudster has case adjourned
A businessman who allegedly defrauded two banks out of $7.5 million is still in custody after his case was adjourned to September 28. Lui Yiu-kwan, 54, who was a shareholder and director of two trading companies, left Hong Kong in October for the mainland after he allegedly committed six counts of 'procuring an entry in the record of a bank by deception'. The Public Security Bureau in Jiangmen handed him over to Hong Kong police last Tuesday.
Youths in court over attempted burglary
Four youths will appear in North Kowloon Court today after being charged with attempted burglary. The youths, aged between 17 and 19, were arrested when trying to use a crowbar to open the grille of a Shamshuipo flat. Police suspect the four suspects were involved in seven other burglaries in Kowloon West and New Territories South this year.
