HK man in suspected murder-suicide in China: report

Last updated at 6.35pm: A Hong Kong man is suspected of killing his 23-year-old mainland girlfriend and then jumping to his death in Shenzhen, local media reported on Thursday.

After killing the woman, the man is believed to have tied himself to her body. He then leapt to his death from the balcony of a 22nd floor apartment in southern Chinese city on Tuesday, the Apple Daily reported.

The tragedy is believed to have occurred at 11.45am on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Hong Kong man and his girlfriend began to argue after the 23-year-old decided to end their relationship, the paper reported.

He asked her to stay, but when she refused he killed her and then committed suicide, the paper reported, quoting unnamed sources.

The lower half of the woman's body was cut off when her body struck a fence, the paper reported. The upper-torso was still tied to the man when he was discovered.

Officers suspect the woman was already dead - possibly killed by her boyfriend before falling from the building. This was because her body did not bleed much, the paper reported.

Police on Thursday were waiting for postmortem results before commenting on the case. The state of the woman's body indicated that she might have struggled before dying, the paper reported.

Mainland officers have listed the case as a murder-suicide.

The 34-year-old Hong Kong man reportedly worked in the construction industry. His girlfriend, 23, was from Jiangsu.

A renovator, surnamed Law, who worked in the building where the tragedy occurred told the Apple Daily 'I didn't see much bleeding coming from the two bodies, only a little from their organs. Their shoes were lying beside their bodies,'

A security guard, who worked in the building, confirmed the man was a construction worker from Hong Kong.

He lived with his girlfriend in an apartment which had two rooms and one living room. Their rent was $3,500 a month. The couple also called each other husband and wife.

The bodies were sent on Wednesday afternoon for post-mortem examination. They were then taken to a funeral parlour.

The man's relatives arrived in Shenzhen on Wednesday to identify his body.
