Derek Fung begins the defence of his HKPGA Championship title today, but has his sights set on a much bigger prize. The 35-year-old has always aspired to play on the European Tour and hopes to press his case this year, after more than a decade in the professional ranks.
'My aspirations have always been to play on the US or the European tour. I've played in Asia for so many years .. . maybe it's time for me now to get on to the European Tour and US Tour.
'The European PGA is more of my focus right now,' stressed Fung, who is favourite to win the HKPGA which starts at Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling today.
Fung said he had had a 'quiet year' due to the changing face of Asian golf, with the Asian Tour being taken over by the players.
'Everybody knew it was going to be a light year, it'll just take a bit of time. From a player's point of view, I know that when things change hands everything eventually works out. I would like to be able to have a full schedule for the year - to be able to play 25-30 tournaments is the only way to become the best.'
Fung's highlight last year was representing Hong Kong at the World Cup in Kaiwah Island, South Carolina, where he and partner James Stewart finished 21st of 23 in a star-studded field.
