But with some clever decoration and stunning 'Nomads of China' fashion last night, it was turned into a vision of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's paradise, all in the name of fighting Aids.

More than 300 people enjoyed a $1,500-a-plate charity gala, while a further 500 joined the party afterwards.

The event aimed to raise $1 million for Aids Concern, which provides prevention programmes and support services.

Organising committee chairman Andrew Yuen said he hoped the event would surpass the target.

'It's never easy raising funds for charity, especially for Aids,' he said. 'But thanks to Sars, people now know how important it is to take preventive measures when dealing with infectious diseases.'
