Sir Elton John could well be invited back to Hong Kong next year to accept a Golden Bauhinia award for services to Asia's World City for Musical Dinosaurs.
It's the city where the lovers of pre-CD vibes can come to relax and choose between an endless array of live acts surely never likely to gather so often in any other city.
Elton did not disappoint. All the golden oldies were there in a show that lasted almost three hours, a veritable 'best of' collection of his hits, and some misses, spanning more than 30 years.
From the moment he walked on stage at the Convention and Exhibition Centre at the start of his mini-tour of north Asia, you could tell he would score Bauhinia points for blandness.
It was obvious Elton wasn't going to be the old queen of yesterday. But it just didn't seem right him launching into The Bitch is Back in a long Napoleon-style coat. And where is the flamboyance of Benny and the Jets without Elton flouncing it up in a feather boa and platform shoes.
And it jarred when his voice could not rise to the occasion on Tiny Dancer. But the audience loved him, and he accepted several bouquets as he stood between numbers to bow and blow kisses.
