Democratic Party veterans Martin Lee Chu-ming and Yeung Sum embarked on the customary post-election thank you tour last night, but the lukewarm reception from the street sent a clear message of disdain.
As legislator Mr Lee and party chairman Dr Yeung pulled out from the Legislative Council building in Central and headed towards Sai Wan, messages of thanks boomed from the loudspeakers attached to the roof of the car.
While Mr Lee and Dr Yeung waved and smiled from the slow-moving car, only about one in 10 pedestrians waved back.
The disdain of some of the onlookers was palpable.
The more working-class the area, the more people scowled and turned away. Many pedestrians had no reaction to Dr Yeung and Mr Lee's forced cheeriness.
One shirtless basketball player on a court near the Wah Fu residential estates made an obscene gesture at the car after it passed.
