The difference between maybe and may be is more than just a space.
'May' is used to show that something will possibly happen in the future or something will be true in the future, but you cannot be certain. It's a modal verb (like 'can' or 'should'), and we always use it with the base form of a verb (e.g. be, go).

However, 'maybe' is an adverb, meaning 'perhaps, possibly'.
