Consumers have been warned that so-called invisible bras carry hidden risks.

In its latest issue of Choice Magazine, the Consumer Council has cast an eye over this relatively new fashion item and found that while they complement strapless evening wear, the bras may not be the best choice for sensitive skin.

The council tested 12 models on 43 women and found some developed irritation and skin rashes.

The strapless bras come in two styles - one with silicone cups that rest directly against the breasts and are joined in the middle, and another with fabric cups that are attached to the wearer using adhesive wings.

'Mild itchiness was common among most trial users,' the council's community relations chairman Matthew Ng said. 'A few of them developed skin rashes and experienced severe itchiness the next day after the trial.

'Invisible bras are, therefore, not recommended for people with sensitive skin, particularly those with allergies or skin diseases.'

The bras, particularly the silicone ones, were also found to be heavy, with B-sized units weighing between 145g and 170g - about equal to an orange.
