I have tried all kinds of backup and recovery systems but I have never been completely happy with any. I copy important files to other disks now so I have three copies of everything.

I try to keep up to date with virus protection, but it is becoming increasingly difficult. A friend told me there was some kind of new hardware solution that did not cost more than the computer itself to solve these problems. Do you know what this is, how much it costs and if it really works?

A company called Juzt produces a card that goes into a standard personal computer. It claims this device can recover just about anything.

Although the company says the card was created with variations of the Windows operating system in mind, it also says the device works with any system (up to 10, in fact).

Here is the blurb: 'No matter how the data is destroyed; either by virus infection, deletion, fdisk, modification, overwrites or improper Windows shutdown ... Just reboot, and your system will recover immediately. No other additional system/data recovery operations are required.'

That is a considerable claim and worth checking out. If you can find somebody who has a Jutz card, it would be a good idea to get in touch. I looked about on the Web and there seem to be only good comments about this card.

Remember that fooling around with this sort of thing can be quite tricky. If you have installed network cards or random access memory in your machine, it should not be too difficult to handle this device. If you have no experience in opening up your computer and fiddling inside, you may want to find someone else to do it.

There are so many ways to compromise a PC that, if what you do is so important (and you cannot afford to buy a Unix machine), this could be a relatively cheap answer to your problems.

But beware. Unknown hardware is often a source of more woe than anything else.

The website has a fairly good frequently asked questions (FAQ) area, where you can get an idea of the amount of knowledge you must have if you get one of these cards.

These devices can handle Linux and other operating systems, but only in a 'recovery' mode. With Windows, they can 'just reboot' and restore everything.

The price seems to be just under US$200, but there are some things to consider. According to the documentation, it is necessary to scan your disk for problems and then defragment it. None of this is particularly difficult, but it is not for the novice.

Although the company claims to be able to help you recover from a virus attack, this is not a serious solution for computer or network protection.

Even if the card does everything the company says it does, this does not mean you can forget about backup. Backup is still extremely important if you value your data.
