A town to paint red

Why you can trust SCMP

Whether you're looking for a walk on the wild side or a sedate sing-song, Shenzhen's nightlife won't disappoint

If you have any energy left at night, your recreational choices might well be determined by which district you are staying in. But there is plenty on offer in a city this big. Being more geared towards business travelers and those passing through on their way to factories in the Pearl River Delta, the area around Luohu tends to cater to a transitory crowd. Futian is a more upscale district, being newer and situated at the forefront of the city's modern development, so it boasts a few big nightclubs and the hotel bars are decent. For international entertainment, the place to go is Shekou.

As its name suggests, the Class Club on the 5th floor of the Century Plaza Hotel (1 Chun Feng Road, Luohu 1, reservations 8236 3999), is pretty swank. This multi-tiered dance club features expensive drinks, western DJs, and more beautiful people than you can shake a stick at. A dress code is enforced.

For karaoke lovers, Club Butterfly (1001 People's Road South, 8234 9695) is worth a warble. If you happen to be around Citic plaza, just next door is Guoqi True Colors (25F Section A, Guoqi Daxia, Shangbunan Lu 8212-9333), a small and cozy club with an excellent view. There's also another True Colors club in Dongmen, True Color Dongmen (4/F, Dongmen Friendship City Jie Fang Road Louhu, 4 8230-1833). This place has a decent western restaurant with live jazz music, great food and English speaking waiters. You'll sometimes find foreign DJs and live bands here.

If it's western-style entertainment you're after, Henry L. Bean!|s is the place. This bar in the Shangri-La Hotel has a pool table, big-screen TVs, and a Filipino band belting out tunes nightly.
