A smooth operator, its only fault is its stability control, which cannot be switched off for cornering fun, though it is not a great handling car anyway. Just sit back and enjoy the sweet performance, ride and superb build quality.

Land Rover Freelander

V6 5-door HSE

The Freelander, revamped this year,  is Land Rover's only 4WD that doesn't have true off-road capability, but it performs and rides  well in the urban jungle, with a smooth V6 and silky five-speed auto transmission. Inside, it's comfortable and roomy for occupants but falls short on luggage space.

Volkswagen Touareg V6

($550,000-$600,000)

The Touareg melds excellent off-road ability with pleasing road manners, and has plenty of interior space. It feels wide on narrow roads, though, and the transmission shift and ride quality are not quite there.
