A transsexual leapt to her death in front of her boyfriend from the roof of a high-rise apartment block in Mid-Levels after a 90-minute standoff with police and firefighters yesterday.

The death came just two days after another transsexual, Louise Chan, 33, killed herself by burning charcoal at home in To Kwa Wan. Chan's death has prompted calls for the government and social groups to provide support for transsexuals.

Yesterday Sasha Moon, 31, went to find her boyfriend, an expatriate, in Glory Heights in Lyttelton Road at about 7am. The man refused to see her, according to police. It is understood the pair had broken up recently but she wanted to be reunited with him.

At about 8.30am, she made a 999 emergency call with her mobile phone from the roof of the 37-storey building, telling police she was going to commit suicide.

Police negotiators were alerted and firefighters inflated an air cushion when she stood near the edge and threatened to jump.

'During the negotiation, the victim refused to move away from the edge or talk with our negotiators. She told our officers that she only wanted to see her boyfriend,' a police officer said.

When her boyfriend showed up just after 10am, she immediately jumped, landing beside the air cushion, the officer said. She was pronounced dead at Queen Mary Hospital.
