A new restaurant serving food from Down Under has opened in Central. Wooloo-Mooloo Bar + Grill replaces French hair salon, Jacques Dessange, at 29 Wyndham Street, Central (tel: 2894 8010). Decorated with Australian Aboriginal art, the two-storey restaurant serves specialities from Australia and New Zealand, with produce flown in daily. The managing director is New Zealander Colin Smith and the chef is Australian Johnny Shen. As you might expect, the restaurant's menu is dominated by seafood, beef and lamb. Appetisers include blue swimmer crab cake with mustard mayonnaise (below left; $110), Sydney rock oysters served three ways - on the half shell with tabasco and fresh horseradish ($135); Rockefeller, baked with spinach and mornay sauce ($135); or Kilpatrick, with onions, bacon and Worcestershire sauce ($135) - and lobster bisque ($90). For main courses, there's a 340-gram rib-eye steak with bearnaise sauce ($210), a 340-gram sirloin steak with red wine sauce ($260), New Zealand lamb rack with herb crust and rosemary jus ($200), baked whole barramundi with dill butter sauce ($180) and baked lobster tail with clarified butter (market price). Desserts include Pavlova with passion fruit sauce ($50), sticky date pudding with caramel sauce ($50) and Hell's Gate hot chocolate cake with warm liquid centre ($65).
