Celebrations for National Day went off with a bang for Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa yesterday when he was struck on the forehead by a party popper. Mr Tung was one of the officiating guests at a gala function organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Fujian Associations. The poppers went off as planned when he toasted the audience, but he was hit by a flying projectile. Witnesses said Mr Tung put his hand to his forehead and turned around, in an apparent attempt to hide the injury from photographers. He then wiped blood off his face with a tissue, they said. A spokeswoman for the Chief Executive's Office last night said Mr Tung was all right, adding that there had been no bleeding. 'Thanks for asking,' she said when a Post reporter called the office. National Day is on Friday.
