Hong Kong's Paralympic heroes return from Athens today after scooping a record medal haul at the Games. The SAR squad will receive a warm welcome when they arrive at Chek Lap Kok airport at 5pm.
Alison Yu Chui-yee, the South China Morning Post's 2003 Student Sportsperson of the Year, won four gold medals in wheelchair fencing. Overall, the Hong Kong fencers finished with eight gold, five silver, and one bronze medal. Hong Kong's boccia squad snatched a surprise gold when Leung Yuk-wing took the individual Class B4 title. Leung joined Lau Yan-chi to win gold in the mixed pairs of Class B4 on the last day of the Games.
Sprinter So Wa-wai also struck gold when he broke the Paralympic record in the T36 category of the 200 metres with a time of 25.15 seconds. The win added to his two silver medals in 100m and 400m. Hong Kong ended the event with a total of 11 gold, seven silver and one bronze, which put the city in 17th place in the medals table.
