THE Liberal Party is expected to face the polls for the first time in a forthcoming district board by-election in Sha Tin.
The party will this week choose a candidate to run for the seat vacated by George Wong Fuk-wah, who resigned last week, saying he was going abroad.
''We are very interested in this by-election and we will make a decision after our Beijing visit,'' said party election committee convener Ambrose Cheung Wing-sum. ''Our branch in the area has been set up and we have worked on the 1994 district board elections for several months. I think it should be a suitable time for us to stand.'' The party, which declined to fight August's Sai Kung Regional Council by-election, appears eager for this contest.
''This is a good opportunity for a warm-up, and we are confident we will find a good candidate. Several members in the district have already expressed their interest in standing,'' he said.
The party's Sha Tin and Sai Kung branch vice-chairman, Leung Chi-wai, said one possible candidate was a member who planned to stand in the area in the 1994 district board elections.
Mr Leung said the constituency, Wong Uk, was favourable to the party as it was mostly private housing and was a middle-class area.
The Liberal Party is expected to face a tough fight from opponents including the United Democrats (UDHK) and Meeting Point.
