Local director Wong Kar-wai is planning to work with Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman on his next project.

According to his production company, Jet Tone Productions, the Shanghai-born director hopes to start shooting the film, with the working title The Lady from Shanghai, from February. His long-time collaborator and art director, William Chang Suk-ping, is meeting Kidman in the United States to discuss her character and the look of the film.

The Australian actress expressed a desire to work with Wong after meeting him last year. 'Wong Kar-wai is basically God as far as I'm concerned,' she told British newspaper The Independent.

'I just adore him. [He] just works on ideas. Someone asked me if I thought it was a risk, but I see it more as a blessing,' she said. 'The formulaic movies are a risk because you know you've got to get through them without being corrupted.'

Wong, who is a darling of the critics after making a string of cult hits such as Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love, is famous for his eccentric methods - taking an extraordinarily long time to finish a film and not letting actors know a lot about their characters.

2046, Wong's new film which opened last week with an all-star cast including Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Faye Wong and Gong Li, took five years to finish.
