docomo unveils heavy duty battery model
Japan's NTT DoCoMo has unveiled a prototype micro fuel cell aimed at boosting the battery life in third-generation (3G) handsets.
According to reports, the micro fuel cell, jointly developed with Fujitsu Laboratories, will last four times longer than conventional lithium-ion batteries.
Advanced mobile phones require large amounts of power to run applications such as videoconferencing. Poor battery life has hindered the uptake of 3G services.
The micro fuel cell generates electric power through a chemical reaction by mixing hydrogen and methanol.
DoCoMo, however, has a long way to go before the battery becomes commercially viable. The prototype weighs a hefty 190 grams.
