SUN Microsystems is to co-package its Wabi product free of charge with Solaris for SPARC '93 and x86 until the end of the year.

Wabi enables Microsoft Windows applications to run directly on Unix-based personal computers (PCs) and workstations at full performance without the need for MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows.

Shipment of Wabi 1.0 will start next month.

Customers who tested the product have reported excellent results, claiming that Wabi runs Windows applications up to three times faster than conventional Windows emulation software on a SPARC workstation.

''The Wabi software enables Unix system users to run Microsoft Windows applications right out of the box,'' said Mary Theis, marketing manager for Sun Microsystems Hong Kong.

''Instead of requiring users to juggle two separate environments, Wabi puts both Unix and Microsoft Windows' applications right at your fingertips with a very simple interface.'' The Solaris 2 software runs Microsoft Windows applications without modification and without the need for a MS-DOS licence.
